The fleet of Bertram 31s at Panamas’s Tropic Star Lodge last week released a phenomenal 102 marlin in six days of fishing, a record for the Piñas Bay-based lodge. Simply put, says Capt. Richard White, “The blue marlin bite was off the charts!”

That number was accomplished even when some boats fished inshore one day to give anglers a rest from battling blues.

Typically, White says, black marlin move in at this time of year. But December rains may have slowed that transition. “The reef was alive with bait,” he says — and blue marlin. For one group of Tropic Star anglers, it proved a week to remember.
